Antibiotic Paste On
Intramedullary Nails
Post-operative infections may be a real concern for some patients. At the Limb Lengthening and Complex Reconstructive Service, Dr. Fragomen and his team take every precaution to reduce the risk of infection. One such method is the use of an antibiotic paste applied to internal hardware.
Creation And Application
Antibiotic Paste is used in surgery when infection is present or when the risk of infection is high. This dissolvable calcium sulfate paste delivers antibiotics directly to the bone and coats the intramedullary nail. This coating is highly effective at fighting bacteria and infection.
Another technique to fight bone infection is by coating an IM nail with antibiotic-loaded bone cement before insertion (as seen above).
