Bone On Bone
In 1989, at 20, I had a spiral fracture of my fibula, which was corrected with the installation of a plate, 9 screws, and a pin.
Over time, the cartilage in the ankle deteriorated until it was bone to bone contact. Walking was painful, and more strenuous activities were out of the question.
My doctors told me the only solution was an ankle fusion, which I was hesitant to do out of concern that it would lead to future knee, hip, or back problems.
Finding Dr. Fragomen
Eventually, I came across an article on ankle distraction, and, after consulting with my orthopedist, found myself in the office of Dr. Fragomen. I had the surgery in 2009/10 (I forget exactly).
My experience with the doctors and staff of the Limb Lengthening and Complex Reconstruction Service and the nurses at HSS was fantastic. From the first pre-op visit, through the surgical process [Ankle Distraction], and ending with the post-op care, the professionalism and concern was fantastic.
I have just returned from hiking in Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park; there is no way I could have done that, let alone enjoyed it as much as I did, without the work of the gifted team at Hospital for Special Surgery."
